CONAKRY — Soldiers close to Guinea’s former junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara have been arrested for inciting a mutiny in an army training camp, a military source said Saturday.

Dadis Camara’s nephew Lieutenant Marcel Guilavogui, former deputy commander of the presidential guard, was among those arrested Thursday along with three other officers and an unknown number of sub-officers.

“They were placed under arrest for inciting rebellion in the barracks of student soldiers in Kaleya near Forecariah,” 110 kilometres (70 miles) south of the capital Conakry, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Two former war-crimes specialists were recently hired as consultants for Guinea’s military junta after it was accused of massacring civilians — and produced a secret report downplaying the violence, Foreign Policy has confirmed.

David M. Crane, the former U.N. prosecutor for the Special Court in Sierra Leone, and his chief investigator, Alan W. White, were once on the front lines of the international effort to hold war criminals accountable for their misdeeds, securing an indictment in 2003 against the former Liberian warlord and president Charles Taylor.

Amnesty International on Wednesday warned that Guinea risks a new era of human rights violations if urgent reforms of the security forces do not take place and the perpetrators of last year’s massacre continue to escape justice. 

In a new report examining the “Bloody Monday” massacre on 28 September 2009 and its aftermath, Amnesty International outlines a series of reforms for Guinea’s security forces to ensure human rights are upheld in the West African country.
